The Phytophactor has a new toy: a photographic slide/film scanner! To celebrate here's an image captured on film over 25 years ago, so it hasn't seen the light of day for quite some time. The economic value of this plant stimulated a lot of exploration and trade, and this one was photographed very close to its original center of trade. You all own it, but it isn't often seen growing.

Another gold star for Shelley, who clearly has some considerable expertise in plant ID. But where was the photo taken? Hint: Lots of Portugese names can still be found in and around this port city.

Goa is a good guess! So very close. But Vasco de Gama, declaring "for Christ and spices", marched ashore in 1898 a bit further south on the Indian subcontinent, at the port city of Calicut (which also provided a nick-name for a type of cotton cloth) in Kerala.
