Just a couple of weeks ago, TPP mentioned that our "Be excellent to everyone" (Bill & Ted) sign was vandalized. It has now happened twice more, two more consecutive Saturday nights in the wee morning hours, not surprisingly at about the time the bars close. Something about beer produces a regression in maturity, and with each reiteration, and realization that this sign is both physically tough, and it's owners persistent, this person or persons become verbally vulgar as if they were the ones insulted by the messages on this sign. Now you would hope that by the time someone is old enough to drink that they had mastered both the 1st amendment and their own anger; one might hope they would think about the sign and perhaps write a letter to the newspaper explaining their reason for outrage. So now the sign is back, having been out of service for all of 1 day. What do you think? Get out the old critter camera and see what we may see?
Vandalism just about tops the list of urban dwellers pet peeves, so when a neighbor reports being the target of vandalism, everyone gets concerned. When the vandalism kept occurring they called the cops. Someone was cutting branches off their little newly-planted redbud at night. Sigh. How well TPP knows the repeated and wanton vandalism the neighbors were talking about because you would not believe how many shrubs and small trees have to be fenced in our gardens to protect them from vandalism in the winter. Bunnies. Cute, fuzzy, little vandals. At times it's a toss up about whether squirrels or rabbits are the biggest yard/garden vandals. Still glad it wasn't TPP who had to apologize to the police. Fortunately the predator police, red-tailed hawks and/or red fox, have been keeping the bunny population down a little bit this year. But the fences went up anyways by force of habit.
Vandalism is one of those things TPP just doesn't understand. What does senseless destruction accomplish. A small sign in our front garden was torn from it's metal stake and the stake was bent over to the ground. The sign says "Yard Smart: safe for all living things". It's a nice program designed to show people that you don't need heavy use of herbicides and pesticides to have a nice looking garden. Pretty controversial, huh? How does this little sign, all of 7 inches square in a light green color and standing all of 2 feet above the ground, instigate vandalism? The vandalism took all of 10 min to repair, and unbeknown to the vandal Mrs. Phactor is close to the distribution source for these signs, and the vandal will certainly get tired of breaking our sign before the Phactors have to worry about not having a sign. Perhaps one of the chemical lawn care people driving by just snapped? Those chemicals can do that to you. Other strange things broken or damaged about the estate suggest that someone, or someones, on or about the same time were running through our yard in the dark and failed to see several obstacles. Perhaps they hurt themselves, one would like to think. Ah, well, crap happens and most likely no explanation will be forthcoming. This is when you wish you had a garden cam to capture these cherished moments.
