A plant pundit comments on plants, the foibles and fun of academic life, and other things of interest.

Uh oh, something went terribly wrong!
This does explain a lot. Experiments do sometimes go wrong, and it does explain the orange complexion. As always, Tom Tomorrow explains what happened that gave us the Incredible Trump.
Junior militiaman play set
Once again Tom Tomorrow nails it in his latest cartoon about The Modern World. OK here's the part that isn't funny, TPP is willing to bet that someone out there has already proposed selling such a junior militiaman play set, maybe without a real gun, but still it may not need to be real to put you in danger. Why? Because there may be some money to make. Who knew a highly-biased reading of the constitution and US history could be profitable in the toy business? Oh, and here's an idea for the taking, get sister Susie the Little Liberal-biased Media Reporter play set so she can play along with Jimmy. Or the Phlox network news pundit play set for intellectual ages of 4-10 years, who knows it could lead to a career.
Fearful things!
Fear is a powerful motivator and so its use in political rhetoric is so common, but unfortunately people can come to fear the wrong or even imaginary things. Tom Tomorrow explains what fears keep right-wingers up at night. It explains a lot.
Same old, same old, that's just how it is
This blog's readers come from around the world. As a result, there are things about the old USA that you probably don't understand like the gun control debate. Here it is explained in just four sentences. Who else could do that except Tom Tomorrow? Actually if someone actually does understand this looniness could they please explain it to TPP?
GOP outreach to women voters
Once again Tom Tomorrow's This Modern World explains GOP voter outreach. How this gonna work?
It just might happen! Or not.
Hoo boy, what a possibility! Tom Tomorrow really scared TPP with this one, but President Cruz is a possibility, however implausible. And a guy can dream, can't he? And this is the country where anyone can be president, and anyone was, and the country did survive, didn't it. Thank you, Darth Cheney for holding it all together. And, yes, Democrats could be that inept. So you see, this could happen.
OK it's a double header of TT today in which the future of the next two years makes you want to cancel your newspaper, rip out your TV, and live in a cave.

Lighten up people, we're just messin' with you!
Oh, those fun-loving GnOPes. Thank Tom Tomorrow for letting us in on the joke. To think anyone ever took them seriously. Seriously.
Right-wing science guy
No question the new GnOPe majority congress inspires us scientists with their attention to science via stunningly appropriate committee appointments. Tom Tomorrow's right-wing science guy explains.
Hard to know what to say about the torture report so leave it to Tom Tomorrow
The release of the summary of the torture report more or less tells us something most people already knew, so it's hard to know how to respond or comment. Only a real Pollyanna would think the USA doesn't have numerous secret closets filled with dirty-dealing skeletons. The only real surprise was that this report acknowledges as much of the dirty dealings as it does. Even still it won't make a big impression on the "USA is number 1" crowd; us cynics weren't disappointed, again. Everyone pretty much already knows that torture as a interrogation technique doesn't work, and this just reinforces that view. Everyone pretty much knows that the CIA and other spooky sets of initials lie, all the time, they can't help it, they're spooks. And if anyone had any doubt that Darth Cheney is the worst person on Earth, his responses certainly have cleared that up. Mostly TPP felt a great sadness that so many people in this country and in our government operate and promote politics and policies of fear, and that they have been so effective in messing with our national psyche. Tom Tomorrow nails it, and provides us with a grin in the process. Strange when your primary source of hope is cartoonists.
Be thankful for cartoonists and comedians, and the truth they speak
Once again Tom Tomorrow gets it just about right, especially if you watch Phlox News. TPP finds this all very depressing. Something really ugly is going on.
Fear of terrorists put to good use
Oh, boy, does TPP love Tom Tomorrow! One of the worst aspects of USA culture is its fear of what might happen, no matter how remote, or how unlikely they are to be harmed. TT nails it.
Those who do not learn from history.....
Here the USA goes again. You think this country would learn, but noooo-oooh. Once again Tom Tomorrow nails it. What can possibly go wrong?
What's the Anti-party for?
Tom Tomorrow is also Tom Terrific (Anyone out there old enough to remember that?) when it comes to summing up the way things are here in the USA. In a few short frames TT shows what the Anti-party is for, or against, and for all these reasons, it's the GnOPe (NOPE - if the G is silent) in TPP's parlance. What a sad, miserable, and ultimately empty perspective on human nature this cartoon portrays. How is it they get any votes at all? Oh, there's a lot of sad, miserable, and ultimately empty people out there.
Tom Tomorrow on tomorrow's income inequality
It's been a long, long time since income inequality in the USA has been as great as it is today. The top 1% are worth as much as the bottom 50% and the difference is growing. How will this end up? Hard to say. So it's good to have such excellent prognosticators as Tom Tomorrow who can clearly see where this all is heading. See if any of the talking points sound familiar.
Now for something completely different - sexy Halloween costumes ala Tom Tomorrow
As TPP has mentioned before, no one has their finger on the pulse of the USA any more firmly than Tom Tomorrow and here he delivers on sexy Halloween costumes. Actually a couple of those costumes are pretty scary because as is well known, the NSA has planted a bug in every single piece of candy distributed in the past decade. So inspect your kid's candy carefully. The NYC cab driver is the biggest fantasy of them all.
Nobody has the USA pegged as well as Tom Tomorrow!
This is Tom Tomorow, a cartoonist. TT on whistle-blowing journalism. TT on government transparency. TT on politicians in your bedroom! TT on Tea-party Republicans in charge. And TT hasn't been locked up yet, which is a good sign. The USA is far from perfect, but there are a lot of countries where Tom would be arrested tomorrow, like Wisconsin.
